What Is Ceramic Coating and Is It Worth It? A Guide for Car Owners in the North East

If you’ve been looking into protecting your car’s paintwork, you’ve probably come across the term ceramic coating. It’s become one of the most talked-about services in professional car detailing over the last few years — and for good reason. But with a lot of conflicting information online, it can be hard to know what’s actually true and whether it’s the right choice for your vehicle.

This guide covers everything you need to know, written from the perspective of a professional mobile detailer working right here in the North East of England.

What exactly is a ceramic coating?

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that is applied by hand to the exterior of a vehicle. Once applied, it chemically bonds with the factory paintwork, creating a hard, protective layer on top of the clear coat. Unlike a wax or sealant, which sits on top of the paint and wears away relatively quickly, a ceramic coating forms a semi-permanent bond that doesn’t wash off or break down under normal conditions.

The result is a layer of protection that repels water, dirt, UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap and light contamination — while giving your paintwork a deep, glossy finish that genuinely has to be seen to be believed.

At Cory’s Car Care we use Performance PPL Reign — a 10H hardness true nano ceramic coating with a proven 7-year lifespan and a downloadable warranty. It’s one of the most advanced coatings available in the UK and is suitable for paintwork, wheels, glass, carbon fibre, wraps and PPF.

What does ceramic coating actually do?

There are a few key benefits that make ceramic coating worth considering:

Hydrophobic protection — water beads up and rolls off the surface, taking dirt and contamination with it. This makes your car significantly easier to keep clean between washes.

UV resistance — the North East gets its fair share of sun in summer, and UV rays are one of the biggest causes of paint fading and oxidation over time. A ceramic coating provides a strong barrier against UV damage.

Chemical resistance — bird droppings, tree sap, road salt and industrial fallout all contain chemicals that can etch and damage unprotected paintwork. A ceramic coating greatly reduces this risk.

Scratch resistance — while a ceramic coating is not scratch-proof, the 10H hardness rating means it provides meaningful resistance against light swirl marks and fine scratches caused by washing.

Gloss enhancement — a properly applied ceramic coating dramatically deepens the appearance of your paintwork, giving it a rich, wet-look finish.

How long does ceramic coating last?

This depends on the product used and how well the car is maintained. Budget coatings bought online and applied at home typically last 1–2 years at best. A professionally applied coating using a premium product like Performance PPL Reign carries a 7-year warranty based on UK average mileage — and up to 10 years with our premium upgrade option.

The key word is professionally applied. The preparation before the coating is applied — the decontamination, the paint correction, the panel wipe — is what determines how well it bonds and how long it lasts. A coating applied to poorly prepared paint won’t perform anything like one applied correctly.

Is paint correction needed before ceramic coating?

In most cases, yes. A ceramic coating locks in the condition of your paintwork — both the good and the bad. If your paint has swirl marks, scratches or oxidation and you apply a ceramic coating over the top, those defects will be preserved and in many cases made more visible due to the enhanced gloss of the coating.

For this reason, we always recommend at minimum a single-stage paint correction before applying a ceramic coating — and for vehicles with heavier defects, a two-stage correction to bring the paint as close to perfect as possible before sealing it in.

How much does ceramic coating cost in the North East?

At Cory’s Car Care our ceramic coating packages start from £450 for a single stage correction and 7-year ceramic coating on a small vehicle, up to £790 for a two-stage correction and full ceramic on a large SUV. This includes the paintwork, wheel faces and glass coating.

While that’s a meaningful investment, it’s worth considering the long-term value. A ceramic coated car is easier to maintain, retains its finish for years and holds its value better at resale. When you factor in the cost of regular waxing and detailing without protection, ceramic coating often works out more cost-effective over time.

Is ceramic coating right for your car?

Ceramic coating is suitable for virtually any vehicle in any condition — it’s just a matter of what prep work is needed beforehand. Whether you’ve just picked up a brand new car and want to protect it from day one, or you have an older vehicle you want to restore and preserve, there’s a package that’s right for you.
